Dont touch it if it works
Yesterday I noticed that my life was too good: all my servers function properly, everything is up, no alerts in weeks. But what fun is there to be had if nothing require care?
Lets restructure and reconfigure everything then!
- I thought
And reconfigure I did. Now everything is beautifully organized, and even documented.
Scrolling through the dns reconds, I found one that pointed to an ip that looked unfamiliar. I went to check all the servers, but it didnt match any one of them. At first I thought that the ip somehow changed and it was cached on all devices that used the service, so I went ahead and dug the dns, but it was okay. The server responded properly from all the computers I have tested from.
Becoming more and more curious, I started searching for the service on all servers, only to find absolutely nothing. Becoming more and more interested in the magic that was going on, I looked up the ip. It was owned by my friend's hosting provider. And that's when I remembered that we moved it there so that it would be closer to the users - mystery solved.
Verdict: dont touch it if it works. Also: never roll out your own cryptography. Bye.
